As per https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2017/12/improving-app-security-and-performance.html, this will be a mandatory requirement to distribute further updates through the Play Store starting from November 2018, i.e. for Firefox 64 or potential mid-/late-cycle dot releases for Firefox 63.

Thanks for raising this, Jan. It looks like we're targetting this for 62 [1] and I started a discussion in that bug to make sure we've got someone working on it.

Given the current state and amount of this bug's dependencies I find that plan a bit bold. I can understand the desire to get as much testing time as possible with the target API already raised, but some of the bugs still open would cause definitive regressions for our users if initially left unresolved.

Yes, the work is done, but from what we've heard meta bugs shouldn't be closed until the changes reach beta or release. We're not sure exactly how to go about this, please feel free to close it if you want
