Steps to reproduce:

I went to a web site that has a fairly large SAN in its certificate.


Actual results:

At certain dimensions the browser will either not provide an opportunity to type into the URL bar, or will otherwise start hiding the search bar when there is still plenty of real estate in the URL bar.  The former is clearly reproducible.  The latter is intermittent.


Expected results:

One key issue is that the SAN from the certificate is taking up a lot of real estate.  There may be no perfect fixes for this, given perhaps a desire to not truncate that.  Therefore, the space trade-off is between three components: 

 * The URL bar
 * The Search bar
 * Addon Widgets


IMHO I would retire the search bar and just give all the real estate to the URL bar, which also can then serve as a search bar.  This is pretty much what happens on any mobile device, anyway, and so perhaps now is the time to make this behavior consistent on desktop/laptop devices.

It should always be possible to enter content in the URL bar, and that is the fundamental fail in this bug.

One more possible repair:

Another way to solve this would be to permit the user to type over the SAN Subject, to cause the URL bar to show up.  This is what happens if one has ANY access to the URL bar already, but I don't know how easy it would be to do from the subject.

should be better now without the search bar. Anyway I'm sure there's another bug about reducing size of the identity panel.

Sorry for being dense- can't quite make out your comment.  is the intent to remove the search bar in an upcoming release?  I had would have thought reducing the identity panel would be your last resort, but that's just me.  FWIW I don't see perfect solutions here- just perhaps better.

it has been removed in new profiles, old profile were not touched but they can remove it.
Most of the search functionality is now in the address bar as well.
