Expected results:

I suggest renaming "Private (browsing) mode" to "Historyless (browsing) mode" in all platforms and references (eg. help articles) on Firefox. 
With the name change it would also make sense to change the icon, I would suggest a crossed out history icon (the clock).

There are 3 primary reasons for the name change: 

1. Users misunderstand the concept 

Despite the descriptions and warnings available, users still mistaken it as something that would protect them network-wise, like a VPN. The word "historyless" would better convey the fact that the change is only local and not as broad as users may think.

2. Extra features are for normal browsing too 

I know Firefox has some extra features to make "private" browsing actually private, however these features are/will be/should be also available for normal browsing. As an example, tracking protection settings have been exposed for Firefox 57, maybe one day they will be enabled by default too?

3. Less confusion for TOR merge 

With the upcoming merge of TOR into main release of Firefox, it would be easier to explain the difference between "historyless" and "anonymous" mode, versus "private" and "anonymous" mode.
