I added tests for regular autoconfig functionality (nsReadConfig) in bug 1413600.

Remote autoconfig is contained in the poorly named file nsAutoConfig and still needs tests.

I was unable to write xpcshell tests due to the timing of the profile-change message that is used to process the pref.

I'm still investigating.

Hiii,
xpcshell tests are quick-to-run tests, that are generally used to write unit tests. They do not have access to the full browser chrome like browser chrome tests, and so have much lower overhead. They are typical run by using ./mach xpcshell-test which initiates a new xpcshell session with the xpcshell testing harness. Anything available to the XPCOM layer (through scriptable interfaces) can be tested with xpcshell.
