Steps to reproduce:

1. Write a new message
Menu Bar → Message →New Message
2. Enable ‘Contacts Sidebar’
Menu Bar → View → Contacts Sidebar
3. Enable ‘Attachment Pane’
Menu Bar → View → Attachment Pane
4. Close ‘Write’ window
5. Write a new message
Menu Bar → Message →New Message


Actual results:

‘Contacts Sidebar’ is showing
‘Attachment Pane’ is *not* showing


Expected results:

‘Contacts Sidebar’ should be showing
‘Attachment Pane’ should be showing

No. "View Attachment Pane" is for the current message only, it's not remembered.

If you want to see the message pane in a new message, use "Initially Show Attachment Pane", see bug 1437305 and the attachment 8972070 [details].

Thomas, what's the reason for remembering the state of the contacts sidebar but not the state of the attachment pane? We didn't think of that, did we? Or at least I didn't.

So far we are just preserving status quo behavior of both widgets. Imho "remember" behavior both for contacts sidebar and in general is  much less useful as it seems.  we've analysed this for several ui elements like message reader's attachment pane and address book's
folder pane and concluded thar remembering is actually counter productive. After adding addresses from sidebar, I close it because I'm done with addresses and want to continue composing without visual clutter and loss of screen real estate. Does that really imply that I don't want contacts side bar for my next composition? I think it's much more likely that in productive environments, users want stable defaults with the flexibility to temporarily show or hide things as needed. Contacts sidebar should probably get a pin or "initially show contacts side bar"
