RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1449487

(Reporter: cud, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
Build ID: 20180516032328

Steps to reproduce:

Install update over Daily 59.0a1 x64 to 60+

Actual results:

Installs & works correctly, but the Lightning extension is no longer available in TB 60+ x64 at all. Lightning 6.1a1, though disabled, could be enabled in 59.0a1 x64, and worked fine.

This forces me to back-grade to 59.0a1 x64, and I can't upgrade to newer Dailies without losing Lightning. Also: why no publicly released TB 64x available for installation yet?

Expected results:

Lightning should remain, disabled by default, but available to be enabled. It's not even present, and a great number add-ons are also tagged as being incompatible.
x64 builds are planned.

As for Lightning: That works fine in the current beta TB 60:
https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/

In the add-ons manager, remove Lightning. Then in preferences, reset:
extensions.installedDistroAddon.{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103}

That should bring back Lightning as packed with that Beta version.

Thank you, but no. The installer URL above only has the installer for beta 32-bit. The x64 installer isn't there; but, when I install May 7th's 61.0a1 x64 beta from the ftp site's thunderbird-61.0a1.en-US.win64.installer.exe, it had Lightning there, but disabled. If I remove it, the about:config you cite above is indeed false, but if I then reset it to true, Lighting is still not there. What procedure should I use to enable it in TB x64 61.0a1? I've back-dated to 59.0a1 until then. I'll try having 59.0a1 update itself, and see if I can get Lightning work that way.
That got me 62.0a1, but Lightning is still gone. Let me check about:info — no, its Tools | Options dialog is broken. Clicking on or tabbing to any heading doesn't page the dialog to the appropriate screen, so I can't access Advanced to get at about:config at all. I'm reverting to 59.0a1 until I can get this working reliably.
Lightning won't work in Thunderbird 61 and newer because support for old style extensions like Lightning was removed from the Mozilla platform. Lightning has to be rewritten to work with Thunderbird 61 and newer (Bug 1449487).

If you need to use Lightning you have to downgrade to Thunderbird 60 with Lightning 6.2.
You should really be using TB 60 beta. That will be released as TB 60 ESR soon.

Understood. I'll remain with x86 TB 59.0a1 until things stabilize. I'll try 60.
x64 TB 60.0a1 of 3/11/2018 from ftp works with its Lightning 6.2a1. Thanks. Any idea when a lightning will be available in x64 TB 60+?
My goodness, what have you dug out there? If you really must have an x64 version, download
https://queue.taskcluster.net/v1/task/Y48KIAsVTmaJ5Ub7Ib2poQ/runs/0/artifacts/public/build/install/sea/target.installer.exe
That's a developer's beta build soon to ship as beta 7.

I've asked the Lightning module owner and he gave no ETA for Lightning in TB NN, NN > 60.
If you want to help and find bugs in the next Lightning release I'd like to ask you to consider switching to Thunderbird 60 Beta. The current 60.0b6 build is from May. Using an old and outdated 60.0a1 build means you might observe problems that are already solved in more recent Beta builds and makes your testing less useful to our small Lightning community.

On the other hand if you want to help and find bugs in Thunderbird than using recent 62.0a1 builds (without Lightning) might be more useful to the Thunderbird community.
I'm using self-updated TB 62.0 x64 (2018-5-23) Daily now, and the included Lightning 65.a1 works fine, except for one problem: If I close and re-start TB, the Lightning icons on the menu bar have disappeared. The AddOns Manager shows it installed, though. In order to get the icons to re-appear for use of the add-on, I have to disable Lightning from TB's AddOns Manager, close TB, re-start it, and the Enable Lightning from the AddOns manager, whereupon TB says it has to re-start, and then the Lightning icons are there again. Since Lightning itself works fine now, is there a procedure I can use that will bring up TB with the Lightning menu-bar icons active? Looks to me like TB is only partially actuating the add-on, not displaying it in the menu bar, on a fresh startup. Thank you.

Typo correction: That's 63.0a1
Please switch to TB 64 Daily. May 2018 is a long time ago and Lightning certainly has become better since then.
