Details

when downloading a tar.gz file from a web page by clicking directly on the link,
the save file menu opens and everything looks fine, except that the download is
very fast and the created file is corrupt.

chosing the link, pressing the right mouse button and selecting the 'Save Link
Target As' context menu option works.
Does this happen on all files your download? From http or ftp? Is the file size
0, or in what way is it corrupt?

Most importantly, what build of Mozilla are you using?
maybe the file is not corrupt but already uncompressed? Try renaming your file
to .tar only and untar it.
I tried it again today. it's not that the file is already uncompressed,
but having a closer look and not just clicking on the save button,
i noticed, that the file was named 'xxxxx.tar.gz.tar'. notice the
second '.tar'. and this was what confused WinZip. After renaming
it by hand to 'xxxxx.tar.gz', WinZip could handle it. I don't now,
if mozilla is responsible for adding the extra '.tar' string.
but thanks for your comments.

i used build 2002051006.
