Chrome animates while Firefox hangs for a bit and just janks the section open. https://perfht.ml/2HqHDho Paint shows up as expensive. Paint flashing attachement (kept tiny for privacy) shows the fireworks of paints happening in Firefox and the surgical paint in Chrome. Following a hunch, I could not see CSS Containment being used in the layout. Webrender is switched off.

Works much smoother with WebRender, but paint flashing is broken so can't test if Firefox overpaints.

I'm guessing this belongs in layout, based on the stack trace. Also, marking as OS X, as I'm not seeing the same behavior on Linux.
Component: General → Layout
OS: Unspecified → Mac OS X

I don't see how this is related to layout to be honst given the profile. I would suspect graphics first given the long layer transactions in the compositor thread.
Component: Layout → Graphics: Layers

Per https://twitter.com/inboxbygmail/status/1039952354450309121 , Google Inbox is being decommissioned. Given that (the fact that this is much smoother under webrender configurations), we may not want to bother investigating much more here.
