Sometime in the last few days this regressed. Clicking on links in WhatsApp used to open them in Nightly. Now Nightly comes into the foreground, but it just shows whatever I had open last, it doesn't open a new tab with the URL that I clicked on. Android 8.0.0 on a Sony Xperia XZ1 compact

Hello, I am able to reproduce this, here is the regression window: Last known good build: 2015-05-05 First known bad build: 2015-05-06 Pushlog: https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/pushloghtml?fromchange=4c93d46ab92f&tochange=60349cbc3d4e Can't narrow it down anymore since mozregression was unable to bisect it more than this.

This regression range can't be right, it's giving a range from 3 years ago. This is a much more recent regression.

This problem seems to have gone away for me. Links open fine in the latest Nightly. I tried reproducing on a second device to get a regression/fix range but couldn't. So maybe it was just some random error on my primary device?

Devices: - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge (Android 7.0); - tested on it yesterday - Samsung Galaxy S7 (Android 8.0.0); - Nokia 6 (Android 7.1.1); - Motorola Nexus 6 (Android 7.1.1): Reopening this as I was able to reproduce it on multiple devices. Running a regression on the other devices gave me the same regression range as in Comment 1. Running a regression range from only one month ago didn't give me a valid regression since all builds have failed. Tried opening links from other apps but I didn't encounter the same problem as with WhatsApp. (Google+, Gmail, Google News, Facebook)

(In reply to Bogdan Surd, QA [:BogdanS, NI] from comment #5) > Running a regression range from only one month ago didn't give me a valid > regression since all builds have failed. In what way did they fail?

(In reply to Jan Henning (on vacation in June) [:JanH] from comment #6) > In what way did they fail? Sorry for the confusion, by they fail I mean that the issue was reproducible on them.

I'm unable to reproduce this issue in Firefox 63 (2018-07-04) for Android on a Nexus 6. Does Nightly need to be the default browser?

The issue is reproducible regardless of the fact that Nightly is set or not as the default browser. STR: 1. Open any link from WhatsApp; 2. Switch back to WhatsApp and open another link. Actual results: Link opens in current tab instead of a new tab. Expected results: Link opens in a new tab. Notes: At first glance, it would seem that the same page is opened, if you wait a couple of seconds the newly opened link loads in the same tab instead of opening a new one. The same goes for each new link you are trying to access after that.
Summary: Opening links from WhatsApp is broken → Links from WhatsApp open in the same tab

In that case the regression range actually makes sense, in that bug 840574 was fixed within that window. So presumably this was actually caused by some recent Whatsapp update in which they started using Browser.EXTRA_APPLICATION_ID for their URL intents.
