User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
Build ID: 20180605171542
Actual results:
The global search input is invisible for some reason.
This isn't reproducible with a fresh profile. (Maybe it is if you create enough accounts?)
On a fresh profile it is visible.
This is a profile that has been in use for some years.
The quick filter is visible, so I never noticed it before.
I thought the global search just wasn't assigned and didn't bother to change it (until a few days ago, when I realized: the global search is assigned to the layout but invisible)
I don't know when the problem started.
Is there a setting/config entry that turns the global search invisible (that I don't know of), or is this a bug?
I attached a screenshot, that shows how it looks like, when I edit the layout.
The marked area next to the spacing is the global search (when I move it to the unassigned objects, I can see the name)

Sry for my very late reply :(
Thanks a lot for the support.
That was it! :)
The search was just disabled. I don't know how that happened, but I wasn't able to find the option in the settings. (I didn't expect it to be in advanced settings but in view settings)
I have an idea, how we could still make this bug report useful:
Currently the icon in the customize window is like this:
When the global search is activated, then it shows the search element, but when the global search is deactivated, then there is no icon at all, which is confusing.
It would be more helpful, if it would show an icon like this one instead:
https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/disabled_108794
Or if there would be a text that says "disabled"/"deactivated".
The current setting's string is:
"Globale Suche und Nachrichtenindizierung aktivieren"
in German
I think, that
"Globale Suche anzeigen und Nachrichtenindizierung aktivieren"
might make it more clear that this also shows/hides the global search from view. (anzeigen means show in english)
While skipping through the settings that particular part of it just wasn't apparent to me.
OS: Unspecified → All
Hardware: Unspecified → All
Summary: global search is invisible → make it more apparent, when/why "global search" is disabled
