Details

Use a Variable Font, in Firefox Nightly, especially a black chunky one (makes it easier to see the problem). You see background-colored lines on the glyphs, making it look like each glyph is made of a stack of puzzle pieces, and you can see the background between those pieces. See screenshots. https://monosnap.com/direct/stfmgSk1g7QxjaSeHzDrL6iJ4KwY4W blown up: https://monosnap.com/direct/gqhael3dXvU8VWfkGwSUH0BJqek1p0 Stephen Nixon on Twitter pointed out this bug, reporting that it happens in both Firefox and Safari. https://twitter.com/ThunderNixon/status/1009878237068001280 He suggests that Authors use `text-shadow: 0 0 0 #000;` to fix it.
Yes, this is a known issue on macOS; see bug 1459858.
