User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.99 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: First time this has happened. I received a reply from a correspondent who has a hotmail address. She top posts so her reply was at the top of the message. It was completely blank under Cinnamon and under Mate. However it was perfectly readable when I was running IceWm. This is on Linux of course. Actual results: See the above. Expected results: It would be nice if I could read her reply when Thunderbird is run under Mate and or Cinnamon.

Since I filed this bug I found out I can read the message by selecting view message as text, so there appears to be something in the original HTML preventing viewing as HTML under Mate and Cinnamon desktops. Strangely I can see the message when I run IceWm, even selecting View as HTML.

Which version of TB are you using? The screenshot you attached shows some barely visible text. Perhaps experiment with: Tools > Options, Display, Formatting, Advanced, Allow messages to use other fonts.

TB 52.9.0 (64-bit) - I will experiment with your suggestions. Two weird things - TB shows the message without a problem under IceWm. Second, view in HTML or simple HTML shows nothing.

Nothing I have done in TB allows me to see the text in this particular message except for selecting text in the view message option. This has never happened before and hopefully won't happen again. I am beginning to think the sender must have selected something like white text on a white background!!

Can you read it using View Message as HTML ? (not simple HTML). If so what can I change in my TB ?

Solved my own problem. I had installed SilverMel an appearance package many versions ago, which at sometime in the distant past was no longer compatible with TB. To solve that I installed a compatibility disabler, which it seems was part of the problem. I disabled it and SilverMel and through the advanced preferences dialog went to a system default which I had to modify to get a, to me, acceptable appearance of TB. The SilverMel developer/maintainer apparently went missing sometime ago. Sorry for all the noise. As I mentioned this was the first message I could not see under the HTML settings. It now shows under all three view options under Mate and Cinnamon.
