User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/67.0.3396.99 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Disabling or enabling "hardware acceleration" doesn't really help, because when enabled it can play HD videos but has freezes on other normal videos, and when disbaled vise versa. With the open source browser Chromium No sync • No WebRTC • No Widevine • 67.0.3396.99 (550428) • Tuesday, 26 Jun 2018 64bit i have no problems at all (there with enabled hardware accelaration). Furthermore, Firefox can't play all video/audio files here, only Chromium can play all: Online media player HTML5 audio/video tester: https://tools.woolyss.com/html5-audio-video-tester/ My system: I have a Laptop Dell Studio 1537, Windows 7 64bit, 4GB Ram, Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450, Resolution 1280x800 Firefox 61.0.1 (64-Bit) Windows and all Drivers are up-to-date! Examples where videos have (mini) freezes when hardware acceleration is enabled: https://www.n-tv.de/mediathek/videos/panorama/Polizistinnen-entscheiden-per-Muenzwurf-ueber-Festnahme-article20529946.html or scroll down an choose any other video. Now Examples where videos have (mini) freezes when hardware acceleration is disabled: https://www.ndr.de/mediathek/mediatheksuche105_broadcast-1587.html Again, with Chromium no problems at all thats why i use Firefox just for normal browsing and Chromium for all media stuff.

Performance profiles for the problem with hardware acceleration on and > off would probably also be helpful. > https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Performance/ > Reporting_a_Performance_Problem When i press Ctrl+Shift+2 nothing happens, i don't see a console or anything else, what exactly do i have to do unter FF 61.0.1 to cature a profile?
(In reply to joefarmer from comment #3) > FF 61.0.1 Like the article indicates, please capture the profile in the latest Nightly in a brand new profile. https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/all/ https://support.mozilla.com/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles > When i press Ctrl+Shift+2 nothing happens If for some reason the keyboard shorcut doesn't work, click the profiler's toolbar icon instead.
FF Nightly 63.0a1 (2018-07-15) (64-bit) With hardware accel ON: regarding that video: https://www.n-tv.de/mediathek/videos/panorama/Polizistinnen-entscheiden-per-Muenzwurf-ueber-Festnahme-article20529946.html i have a big freeze between second 00:07 - 00:10 Tell me if the recording worked, here is the link for it: https://perfht.ml/2KZFT5h With this Nightly version i have now lesser freezes in the videos form the www.n-tv.de website.
(In reply to joefarmer from comment #5) > Tell me if the recording worked Thank you for making the effort. A developer will have to stop by and look at this report to proceed.
I have discovered another huge problem with Firefox/Nightly. Hardware accel ON: Watching on www.twitch.tv videos/streams in 1080p60 quality, it completely freezes (i can only hear the sound though). It can play 720p60 quality, but not so smooth as with normal 720p or 480p. Hardware accel OFF: Both 1080p60 and 720p60 freeze (but can only hear the sound though). Normal 720 works but from time to time some mini freezes. Chromium plays everything in fullscreen without problem, no matter which quality: 1080p60, 720p60, 720p, etc. I hope that the FF team finally starts spending time to fix that and become as good as Chromium.
Priority: -- → P3
I have another huge problem with Firefox/Nightly. The longer i use it, the more memory are used, even just with one or two tabs. FF uses 2-3 times more RAM than Chromium. Over time, Chromium uses just 500-800MB and FF uses significantly more: 500-2400MB
FF doesn't free the memory as good as Chromium when moving to other sites or closing tabs. BUG: memory leak (also known for years).
First success: with the Firefox Nightly 63.0a1 (2018-07-19) (64-bit) i don't have any freezes in the videos at www.n-tv.de anymore. I hope that the other bugs will be fixed soon, too. Thanks and good work guys.
There is another bug when hardware accel is ON. Sporadically, videos look like this when i play them: https://abload.de/img/badscreenacer0.png
There is another bug that hasn't fixed for years: if the hardware accel is ON, and i move the mouse cursor over different tabs, the cursor moves very stuttering. With the new Firefox Nightly 63.0a1 (2018-07-20) (64-bit) this problem became now again very noticeable. Please fix that, too.
joefarmer, could you clarify if the original issue with stuttering is still taking place? I know it can be a hassle, but if you could create separate bugs to track issues aside from video stuttering, that would help. It allows developers working on different areas to track the issues, and for the focus of each bug to remain clear.

Summary: Bug known for years, Firefox still stutters and has (mini) freezes when playing videos → Firefox still stutters and has (mini) freezes when playing videos

It allows developers > working on different areas to track the issues, and for the focus of each > bug to remain clear. The original issue has been solved (regarding when hardware accel is ON). I can't see any video-stutters (especially at www.n-tv.de) anymore. Good job! But the problem is (if hardware accel is ON), that some videos at different sites somehow look like that: https://abload.de/img/badscreenacer0.png I can hear the sound though, but again with Chromium these kind of problems never occured. Also the www.twitch.tv problem hasn't been solved, watching streams at high resolution still doesn't work. It looks like that Chromium uses a much better,up to date, free codec pack for all kind of different media. http://chromium.woolyss.com/

I suspect the original issue is the same as bug 1450952. We're hitting the code path to handle these cases for the linked video. The linked profile, as well as the reports that running nightly (63) has helps, also support this. The garbled output shown in https://abload.de/img/badscreenacer0.png looks like it may be bad hardware decoding (which would also explain why it happens with accell on). For the twitch.tv issue, it would useful to have a profile, like the one in this bug, to get an idea on what's going on. For both these cases could you please create new bugs?

Look, it's no fun browsing with FF/Nightly. Since the newest version 63.0a1 (2018-07-20) (64-bit) everything is so slow and unresponsive, also the mouse cursor or switching between tabs. There are too many issues when hardware accel is ON and i don't wanna create for every bug new threads. I have decided to deinstall FF and stay with Chromium only even though it sucks at scrolling down at pages.
I'm sorry to hear that. However, without the information to diagnose these cases, or them being associated with the relevant components, engineers will not be able to debug them.
Livestream: https://www.twitch.tv/pava Quality: 1080p60 The video completely freezes, i can only hear the sound though. Here is the profile for that, tell me if it worked: https://perfht.ml/2LB7vKq
Another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kUsM8dkXnE The same problem when watching in Quality: 1080p60 the video completely freezes, i can only hear the sound though. Here is the profile for that: https://perfht.ml/2Lx3u9P
And here is the other bug where the video looks like garbled (the sound works though). Here is a screenshot of it: https://abload.de/img/messedvideo6xcz0.png And here the profile: https://perfht.ml/2L8pawK
Here is another example where the video looks like garbled (the sound works though). Video URL: https://www.sample-videos.com/video/mp4/720/big_buck_bunny_720p_10mb.mp4 I've also made a screenshot: https://abload.de/img/badvideoqifou.png And here is the profile: https://perfht.ml/2Lf9Jmw
And another video where the video is sometimes completely green. Video URL: http://file-examples.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/file_example_MOV_1280_1_4MB.mov I've also made a screenshot: https://abload.de/img/videogreen62em4.png And here is the profile: https://perfht.ml/2LCzKsi
I have found a solution (regarding hardware accel ON) for the original stutter BUG described in the first post, and for the garbled BUG describend in the last 3 comments #20 #21 #22 I have reported the garbled BUG also here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1477495 Firefox 61.0.1 (64-Bit) One SOLUTION (hardware accel ON) for two BUGS: about:config media.hardware-video-decoding.failed set it to "true" That's it, solvend two BUGS !! (The Firefox standard setting is "false" that causes these problems, some idiot really messed up here !!) Thank you for nothing!
Chrome disables the driver version you have because it's known to cause issues. Setting media.hardware-video-decoding.failed will disable hardware acceleration for video decode. The original stutter bug will not be fixed by this, but it will change the presentation of the bug: this bug is caused by sites resending the same initialization data for media. This causes parts of the video pipeline to be recreated, which will have differing impacts depending on the GPU or CPU doing the decode. Similarly with the garbled bug, disabling the graphics card performing video decoder operations prevents the cases where it fails to decode correctly. I appreciate the extra profiles, and the creation of the above bug. I also understand your frustration. However, personal abuse is only going to diminish interest in helping you.
Reasons for the frustration: Firefox was a really good browser 7-10 years ago. Instead of implementing useless **** like Pocket, Screenshots, Activity Stream, Follow-on Search Telemetry, Form Autofill etc. FF should have put their time and effort in fixing BUGS and make sure that the browser works like a charm. And for years FF still has the memory-leak, the longer it runs, the more RAM will be used and not be freed. It also has bad hardware support as we see (with old hardware/drivers). That are the main reasons why FF sucks and Google Chrome became so big.
Guys, i have made a final decision: Because Firefox uses over time too much RAM and doesn't free it and because of the very bad hardware support, extreme bad audio/video/media playback support, i have deinstalled Firefox forever. I will stay with Chromium that doen't have these problems at all. I won't post here anymore, nevertheless i wish you all the best.
