Currently one has to open the "star" menu to see the assigned tags.

It's an interesting request, but we're not going to implement it because it doesn't look like it would be important for most of the users. Tags are useful to organize and retrieve things, a little bit less when you're already on a page you found. Anyway, we are working on a WebExtension API for tags that may help here (bug 1225916).
