Details
This afternoon I did a local build of central, revision 12f42d129762
No mozconfig, just plain ./mach build
After the build finished, somehow that local build has become my default browser for opening links. This is made even more curious by the fact that I didn't actually -open- the built copy of central (nor did I even run tests!)
The closest to anything 'peculiar' I did, was i used ./mach build-backend -b CompileDB tp build a compile_commands.json.
It's particularly curious to me, as I tried setting Safari as default, then using the in-Nightly default setting to take it back, and yet still, links want to open using the local build.

Seems to have resolved itself overnight? Or most recent update to nightly finally too.

So: This happened again today, and went away under the same circumstances:
Local build takes over as default browser, then update of nightly returns it to being in charge.

Is it possible you have left a window or a process open from that local build while experiencing this? If firefox is already running, any new browser windows - whether you click desktop icons or open links - will use the already-running firefox. Unless you explicitly open with -noremote and a different profile.

Alas, no. Both times this has happened, I haven't even opened the local build until I click a link in something like Mail.app, and so I get a Gatekeepeer first-time-opening-this-app warning widow.

I think you're totally right this is a dupe of Bug 1470785, and the description there is better, so resolving as dupe.
