User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:61.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/61.0
Build ID: 20180712135629
Steps to reproduce:
Drag a bookmark to the main Firefox toolbar. Drop it there. The bookmark is not added.
Actual results:
Bookmark didn't appear in the toolbar
Expected results:
The icon of the bookmark should be next to other icons in the main toolbar.
According to this link https://superuser.com/questions/616159/how-to-add-a-bookmark-button-to-the-main-firefox-toolbar/616181 previously it could be done with an extension "Custom Buttons" addon, but now it is not possible anymore.
My use case:
I have a javascript snippet for printing the page to PDF. I would like to call it directly from the toolbar.
Other use case might be having couple of favorite sites on the main toolbar to be able to access them quickly.

You've just described the reason the Bookmarks Toolbar exists. If you don't like the separate bar,
1. Click the Menu button and choose Customize.
2. Drag and drop "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" onto the navigation toolbar or the tab bar.
3. Click the Toolbars button and uncheck "Bookmarks Toolbar" to hide the empty Bookmarks Toolbar.
4. Click the Done button when finished.
Best to keep only a handful of items there with short titles. If "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" unexpectedly ends up in the overflow panel, that's bug 1421021.

Ah, thanks!
I didn't know you must have bookmarks toolbar enabled to make it available for movement while customizing. Now by accident I've found this out.
Of course it would be nice if one could simply drag and drop a page or bookmark to the main toolbar, but this solution also works. From my perspective this ticket can be closed now.
