Build ID: 20180704003137
Steps to reproduce:
I tried to update manually from TB 52.9.1 to TB 60 from a local mar file downloaded here:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.0/update/linux-x86_64/es-ES/
Actual results:
No update is performed. Log as follows:
PATCH DIRECTORY /opt/outside
INSTALLATION DIRECTORY /opt/thunderbird
WORKING DIRECTORY /opt/thunderbird
DoUpdate: error extracting manifest file
failed: 39
calling QuitProgressUI
Expected results:
Successfully updated TB.
Maybe related to Bug #1448001
Okay, not a bug. Apparently no update is possible from older releases.

Agreed. But it is not clear if an update will be available a bit later.
The text says: «Thunderbird version 60 is currently only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as upgrade from Thunderbird version 52 or earlier.» Note the above «currently» it can suggest that «now» is not available but is uncertain for the near future.
May I suggest a rephrase?
If an update will be available:
«Thunderbird version 60 is now only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as upgrade from Thunderbird version 52 or earlier. You may expect updating as usual on the next days.»
If an update will NOT be available:
«Thunderbird version 60 is only offered as direct download from thunderbird.net and not as upgrade from Thunderbird version 52 or earlier.»
