It is possible that identity email is null for some identities. 

If this is the case, edit message as new (among other cases) will not work - the compose window is not set up properly due to a js error.

Turns out for me the account with no email is a (likely auto-created) news account. So not a super normal case, but I did have a similar problem with two old profiles of mine.
