I ran into a situation locally where my rooted will hang on Pixel 2 8.1.0/OPM2.171019.029.B1/4720900 with Magisk su when executing su 0 id via adb.py. This blocks any unit testing locally for me a least. The solution is to check for su -c before su 0 and if su -c works, then don't even try su 0.

Do not check for su 0 id if su -c id is supported, r=gbrown.
