a useful addition to the mail client would be an option tu turn off images in
HTML mails.

something like the Unix Evolution mail software which allows to set three options:

show
- no images at all
- images in emails send to me from people in my contact list/address book
- all images

The "view as simple HTML" option does this.  See bug 147784

"view as simple HTML" doesn't address "- images in emails send to me from people
in my contact list/address book". reporter, perhaps you should create another
bug specifically to address this issue and we mark this bug as WFM

Reporter: "simple html" (bug 30888) is only in the mozilla trunk, not in the 1.0
branch. It won't be in 1.0, but you'll find it in 1.1.

I am marking this a duplicate of bug 30888 based on the summary. If you
disagree, please reopen this bug.

If you would like an "images in emails send to me from people in my contact
list/address book" option, please file a new RFE.
