Windows 98 v4.10.1998 Windows Media Player v6.4 plugins: npdsplay.dll v3.0.2.625 & npwmsdrm.dll 4.1.00.3857 From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0rc3) Gecko/20020523 BuildID: 2002052306 (although Talkback reports it as 2002052308, see bug 148482 (http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148482) see Talkback IDs TB6877649G, TB6878029Q, TB6882296M, TB6883071E & TB6883731Z M$ Windows Media Player v6.4 (WMP) crashes Mozilla when embedded and interacted with (i.e. press the play or stop button). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. make sure WMP v6.4 plugins (npdsplay.dll v3.0.2.625 & npwmsdrm.dll 4.1.00.3857) are in plugin folder before launching Mozilla 2. go to http://mediaframe.yahoo.com/detect/lite/script.html?.intl=en&.done=/launch%3flid=wmv-100-s.2715070--133796,wmv-300-s.2715072--133797,rnv-100-s.2715073--133798,rnv-300-s.2715075--133799,wmv-56-s.2715100--133800,rnv-56-s.2715101--133801%26p=fifa%26c=onepane%26f=90353079%26.intl=en%26.small=1%26.close=1%26.ti=http%3a//us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/gen/pf/gotc_banner1.jpg%26.bi=http%3a//us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/gen/pf/gotc_banner2.jpg 3. it will detect your settings (OS, browser, connection speed & firewall) 4. accept settings, which will take you to the clip 5. while loading, 2 errors are reported successively in the status bar: exception: null Applet appObs notinited then the browser is moved back to the previous page 6. go forward, back to the video clip page and click either the play or stop buttons on the embedded WMP as the page is loading. 7. BLAMMO! Actual Results: Crash :( Expected Results: No crash, view a (supposedly) great football (soccer to the usOFa types) goal. In addition to the TB IDs, I have 2 Dr. Watson log files that I can attach. The first one was grabbed when Mozilla crashed b/c of pressing the play button on the embedded WMP & it listed an unknown module causing the crash. The 2nd log was grabbed after Mozilla was crashed when pressing the stop button on the embedded WMP & it indicated: "Windows Media Player 2 ActiveX Control attempted to read from memory that does not exist. It may be using an uninitialized variable, or it may be attempting to access memory after having freed it. Module Name: MSDXM.OCX Description: Windows Media Player 2 ActiveX Control Version: 6.4.07.1112 Product: DirectShow Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation" The following bugs/comments may be relevant or pass enlightenment: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66015#c30 [WMP broken on NT & Win95: workaround as helper?] http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66015#c44 [WMP not scriptable] http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66015#c58 [more info] http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119045 [OSX: WMP fails on initialize] http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=134355 [WMP not playing on site] If I should attach the Dr. Watson logs, let me know :)

P.s. b/c of mplayer2's increased bloat with higher versions, and other reasons not worth mentioning here, I cannot run WMP above 6.4, so please do not ask me to install a higher version of WMP. Also, this needs to be tested on NT and Win95, as 6.4 is the highest WMP for those 2 flavors of winblows.

The steps here give an error, then crash Netscape v4.79 build 20011017 (should theoretically crash versions 6.x & 7.x, thought I haven't tested the higher 2 [don't have them installed]): # Error: malloc failed while setting up zig (-1) # jar file: unknown # path: D:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\\java\classes\JAVA40.JAE hit OK to that message, and then Netscape 4.79 crashes & neither Talkback nor Dr. Watson are triggered. :( However, with the java error, I'm not sure 4.79 is crashing for the same reason as Mozilla...

It works for me, using WinXP and Windows Media Player 8.0 and build 2002053106 Dlls : npdsplay.dll : 3.0.2.627 npwmsdrm.dll : 4.0.1.3920 It seems to be a WMP 6.4 bug ! Do you tried with WMP 7.1 ?

Frederic, as per comment #2, I will not run anything higher than 6.4. Additionally, WinNT/95 users can't run anything higher. Yes, it seems to be a 6.4 issue, albeit a nasty one...
