From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0rc3) Gecko/20020523
BuildID: 2002052309
The above website is a good example, but i have seen this in other java-based
forms as well.
(For the record: My java is the default netscape plugin downloaded right after
installing Mozilla 1.0RC3 yesterday.)
Issue: Only the upper half of text entered in a java-based form will show, as
the text field appears to be too small (or the default fontsize too large?) -
i.e. none of the entered text can be read. Effectively, this makes the form
unusable. This issue has persisted through a series of Mozilla builds since
0.9.3?? for me, which is why I am reporting it this time.
The same java-based form works well with Netscape 4.7? .
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.go the the above web-site
2.click on "Start Online-Version
3.Try to enter any username and password in the form which follows. (That
suffices - although this is an online-banking applet, you will not need to even
log on to see the problem.)
Actual Results: you will see that you are entering text but will not be able to
read it since the lower half is missing.
Expected Results: well, you should see the whole text.
My Linux installation is a fresh SuSE 8.0, but problem does not seem to be tied
to that.
I apologize if I should not have placed this as major in your opinion - in that
case please relegate to normal or whatever you may think applies. However, for
me, this behaviour ruins a whole class of web applications - any java-based form
where I need to enter text, and I expect the same to be the case for many others.

I see it all the time. Windows is fine, Linux is hell;-)

I use Java(TM) Plug-in 1.3.1-b24. Maybe Volker uses some other version. I will
ask my admin about 1.4.
Let me add another testcase:
https://banking.sonline.de/sparkasse-wuppertal/
Just type into the fields (first, you have to move the mouse until it shows up).
pi
As before works under WinXP but https://banking.sonline.de/sparkasse-wuppertal/
doesn't complete loading until you do move the mouse - maybe that should be
logged as a separate bug?
Do you know if the applet works using the applet browser that is part of 1.3/1.4
JDK?

Ian, for me (I used serveral computers and different version of Mozilla and OS
and Java) it always loads, then displays a message. Then you have to move the
mouse to initialize the applet before getting the form. This is intended and
explained in the German text. The you type numbers in the first field, which is
account number.

WFM: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.1b) Gecko/2002072818
Java(TM) Plug-in1.4.0
Now, this is good news. Anybody still having a problem with some applet somewhere?

Err ... I have only just downloaded Mozilla 1.1b, and my news is not so good.
Apparently, Sparkasse Erlangen have changed their page layout, and it no
longer loads at all for me. All it shows is the ascii text "hello3", that's
it.
Hence, I can not test the loadability of their java applet at all any more.
Mozilla 1.0 does display the new www.sparkasse-erlangen.de page, takes me to
the applet download page, but then fails to find the applet (presumably a
momentary dns problem ...)
Am I missing something?
Basic setup still the same (SuSE Linux 8.0, Intel PC, kde, ...).
Oh yes - I used the talkback-enabled net-based installer, but installed the
navigator only!
I will test the java applet with 1.1 as soon as it works, or when someone
gives me a hint what it is that I might have messed up. Should I file the
failure at
www.sparkasse-erlangen.de
as a separate (browser) bug?

You get this "hello3" on IE6 and NS4.x as well as mozilla buildID 2002080508 on
WinXP. If you have a contact email/phone number for the website it might be
worth contacting them.

Looks like http://www.sparkasse-erlangen.de is working again, reporter could you
please check to see if the applet is now working?

Hi, www.sparkasse-erlangen.de seems to have moved to www.sparkasse-erlangen.info. Aha.I have updated the test URL accordingly.(Still, just click "Start Online-Version", and there is is.) Unfortunately, the problem persists with 1.1beta (build 2002072204),using the default downloaded java plugin.

Nobody reported a problem anymore in the last few comments. Closing as WFM. I
think at the latest in Java 1.4.1 it works. Even in my 1.4.0something it does.

About the closing of the bug: Agreed. It works for me using Mozilla 1.0.1, and Sun's J2SE 1.4.0_02, I believe. Two points:* a more visible pointer to the PluginDoc for Mozilla would be good. By default, Mozilla simply downloads the Netscape supplied JRE when you hit a java page and do not yet have the java plugin installed. 99 % of end users will do that and then find that "java does not work". * While 1.4.0_02 works, it is _dreadfully_ slow. I was going to some more testing before I came back to this bug report with other jre's / Mozilla 1.1 /..., but never got round to do it. Anyway, thanks for the assistance,:-)Volker Blum
