User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:62.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/62.0 Build ID: 20180830143136 Steps to reproduce: I updated Firefox to version 62.0. Actual results: Since then the default page, whenever I open Firefox, is set to www.sm.de. I tried changing it in the settings by setting the default page to google, the default firefox suggestion and an empty site. But the site does not change it will always start with www.sm.de. Expected results: The default page should change to whatever I choose as my default starting page.
Component: Untriaged → Preferences
After you reset the page in the settings, if you open a new window (ctrl-n), does the right page show up? Also, can you go to Help > Troubleshooting Information, click the "Copy raw data to clipboard" button, and paste the result as a comment in the bug?

I tried your suggestion with opening a new window after setting the settings and that works. When I searched the web I also found this guide which ultimately solved the issue: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/wrong-home-page-opens-when-i-start-firefox-how-fix Apparently somehow this text appeared in the target section: http://www.startfenster.de/tab If I delete this section then the problem is solved. But I did not install any third party software and only updated Firefox. So maybe it comes with the update. Is this possible or am I really at fault here?

Thanks for the update! I'm glad you managed to sort out the issue. > But I did not install > any third party software and only updated Firefox. So maybe it comes with > the update. Is this possible or am I really at fault here? For sure Firefox doesn't link to 'startfenster.de'. There are no hits for 'startfenster' when searching our codebase (or the localization repository). So no, it won't have come with any official Firefox updates. So it sounds like something was installed without your consent. I would suggest using anti-malware and/or anti-virus software to check your computer (Windows Defender, which comes with Windows 10, would be a good start) to make sure nothing else is running on the computer that shouldn't be. If you need more help with that, there's folks on the forums at https://support.mozilla.org/ who can help you further.
