I'm using Mozialla 1.0 RC3 on a german RedHat 7.3 installation. I wanted to install the German/Austria language pack. I clicked on the right link for 1.0 RC3, the file was downloaded but then a dialog window appeared saying: Error -215 lang. pack cannot be installed. What's the problem?

-215 means READ_ONLY, is it possible that you don't have write permissions to your Mozilla/chrome directory as the user you're installing from? See http://www.kairo.at/mozilla/download.html#PackInstall

Do you still see this with Mozilla 1.0? If no, then we should resolve this somehow...

A more verbose error message would be a good idea. I could install the langpack as root. But there should be really a possibility to do this locally for every user. On a multi-user system you might have a lot of users speaking different languages, so it would be great if they could do local installs of their favourite langpacks using ~/.mozilla if the langpack is currently not available as a globally accessible file in /usr/lib/mozilla. Another problem: I could not change from english to german using a user that has the Mail window as default window. I had to change this back to browser window. May be the langinit routine is called at the wrong position.

OK, I'll extend the error message I have in my install script for ACCESS_DENIED to be also showed for READ_ONLY. This message asks you to check if you have write permissions to the Mozilla directory and to probably install as root / system administrator. You're right, it would be nice if the user could install this in the user's profile directory, and that's also possible on other platforms than unix-based ones. We're blocked by bug 109044 there :( For the other problem, you should probably file a new bug report against the Browser/Localization component. As this seems to be working now (as root), and I did a change for future builds so that users get warned, I'll mark this FIXED.
