While adding the Valencian language and dictionary, I notice that there's a misinterpretation on the description of the language Valencian. Valencian is not Catalan (Català) nor a dialect from Catalan. Valencian is a language like the Mayorquin (the native language from the Balearic Islands) with their roots from the Romansç. The first scriptures in the language Valencian, where discovered 100 years before the Catalan language. You can find this information on the Internet, http://sociedadeslibres.com (Free sociaties). Valencian is the language for the Community Valencia (Castellón, Valencia and Alicante). Could it be possible to change the description Catalan (Valencian) to Valencian and also the description for the language pack, Valencian and the General dictionary Valencian dictionary? With kind regards, Rafael Martinez Carrascosa

Clearly this is not a bug for the Catalan team. It's likely an issue to file on AMO (and GitHub). Having said that: I'm seeing something completely different on the Italian page https://addons.mozilla.org/it/firefox/language-tools/ In the package itself I see name = "Català (valencià) Language Pack".
Component: ca / Catalan → Other
I see it too. On the Italian site, the names of the dictionary is correct, Valencian, Valencià. On the 'Nome lingua' this should be only Valencian, Valencià. Catalan, Català should be removed from there. Catalan, Català is only corresponding to the Catalan language or Catalan Dictionary. Perhaps this is incorrectly interpreted on the other languages. The contence of the language pack for Valencian should be checked with someone with the knowledge of Valencian, not Catalan because the languages are very different.

I think there is mistake in all this matter, nobody says that Catalan and Valencian are exactly the same language, it's more that they are related languages with a common base and a close relationship. The discussion about if it's or not language, dialect, etc. it's eternal and takes to no place.

I think Rafael will not agree with this view but, as I understand, it’s what mainstream linguistic studies propose.

The selection of the name to use in the localization was chosen to match the most extended in the other software supporting Valencian. Of course the word Catalan could have been excluded to not hurting some sensibilities but it would be incoherent as the language codes in all common software supporting Valencian indicate that Valencian is a language in the Catalan family, other persons would be hurt by negating this relationship.

I think this bug is more about a political view than a technical issue, here is not the place to discuss that so I think the bug must be closed.
