Chrome behaves the same. I would have filed a bug if it closed the search bar.

In my opinion "Esc" functionality in Firefox should always be "close window" and "close any open toolbar" (like search).

Who has to decide if we/Mozilla makes the "Esc"-key input close the search bar when FF window is focussed while search bar is not focussed? After all, the characters in the search field stay there and re-appear when pressing "LCtrl+F" again.

While the focus is inside content there isnt really a way to be able to do this consistently without interfering with content, also would be inconsistent with other applications. Sorry
