Thunderbird does compact, not compress. If password was lost when a compact occurred it would be an interesting correlation, because compact doesn't touch anything password related. Anything else happen in that time period? And what antivirus SW do you use?

Summary: compress lost password → compact lost password
Anything else happen in that time period? Yes - I didn't realise but my provider (Telstra) had locked out email access. I tried to change an email password but the said it could not be done at this time for security reasons. I engaged "Chat" and got a new password. Ten minutes later, the email system worked and all my email accounts down loaded new emails. Have to change a password again but all ok now. Thanks
