User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:62.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/62.0
Steps to reproduce:
re: posting "failed to connect via oauth" post on support.mozilla.org
Upgrade to Thunderbird 60.2.1 and login to gmail
Actual results:
Connecting to gmail returns the message "Failed to connect via oauth: 2147500036". Messages are downloaded after clicking OK two times in response to the message. I am using oauth2 in my gmail settings, and it used to work flawlessly before the update. When restarting Thunderbird, gmail presents the login window and the 2-factor authentication page. I check "Don't ask again on this computer", but the 2-step window comes up again when restarting Thunderbird.
Expected results:
Remember gmail password and download gmail messages

What's the Support@Mozilla link? I'm not a Gmail or Oauth2 expert but my Gmail setup works in TB 60.2.1 and I think we would have more complaints if it didn't. Oh, I don't use 2FA for that account, that's the difference.
Geoff, Wayne any insights here?

I just saw this in support https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1236292 - looks like same person
Maybe Matt has insight

I am seeing the same behavior in Thunderbird v60.2.1. I keep getting the "Failed to connect via oauth: 2147500036" error every time I click a message in any folder. Thunderbird also regularly prompts me to re-login with my Gmail credentials and reauthorize via OAuth. I have 2FA enabled. Thunderbird does, however, download the messages successfully.

Geoff, I don't want to put another NI onto bug 1496343, but please look at that one, too.

Okay, I've tried to reproduce this but can't. Some ideas though:
* I haven't seen anyone mention whether or not they have a master password. As that was one of the big changes between 60.0 and 60.2.1, it's likely to be related.
* Did you set up Google 2FA before or after setting up the account in Thunderbird? I wonder if removing the account and setting it up again might fix the problem. (I know that's probably not ideal.)
* You could also try just removing the credentials from the Saved Passwords section of TB's options.

* Or revoking Thunderbird access from Google's security settings.
* I am not using a master password.
* I set up 2FA before setting up the TB account. 2FA has been working fine with TB until the latest update.
* I have deleted the gmail credentials from the saved passwords, deleted/set up again gmail, and revoked TB access in Google security. None of these fixed the oauth problem. After setting up TB again and reauthorizing it with 2FA, I can see the authorization reappearing in Google security, but TB keeps emitting the error message "Failed to connect via oauth: 2147500036".

Okay, I've tried a few new ideas out too, no luck.
What if you restart in safe mode? ("Restart with add-ons disabled" on the help menu.)
If that doesn't work you could create a temporary new profile and set up your account there. http://mzl.la/1BsOAYy tells you how to do that.

safe mode did it! The culprit was the "Gmail buttons" add-on.

FYI, this change was backported and broke the "Gmail buttons" add-on.

That's unfortunate, but the master password fix was important. It had already been backported to TB 60 beta 11, so there was time for the add-on author to adapt his add-on.
