I tested this on Ubuntu 16.04, Nightly 64.0a1 (2018-10-14) and Firefox 62 and cannot reproduce it.

Can you please test if the issue is reproducible in safe mode? Here is a link that can help you:

Also please download Firefox Nightly from here: https://nightly.mozilla.org/ and retest the problem.

Hi David. Unfortunately I can't reproduce the bug either. If it helps, I fixed the problem by clearing cookies and site data
for mail.google.com and prior to that,  the only way I could get it to - apart from running in private mode - was to press  Ctrl+Shift+R - which evades the cache

Cookies and cache can effect negatively any website, so I cannot mark it as a valid bug for Firefox. I am glad that clearing them resolved your issue. In this case, I will close it as resolved, invalid, but feel free to reopen it anytime you reproduce it with a clean browser.
