User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:62.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/62.0 Steps to reproduce: 1. Choose any 2 folders, e.g. Drafts and Trash, they can be from the same mailbox. 2. Delete a message from one of them (e.g. create & save a draft and then delete it) to make the folder purge-able. 3. Make sure the other chosen folder is clean (purged). 4. Right-click the purge-able folder and purge it. The status bar tells the size purged, e.g. "1kB saved" (not relevant). 5. Now, right-click the OTHER folder and purge it, even though there's nothing to purge from it. Thunderbird was started in safe mode, all add-ons disabled. Mailbox is irrelevant, happens on many. Actual results: The status bar STILL tells the size purged, from the PREVIOUS folder. Expected results: The previous folder's purging message should probably disappear from the status bar, or maybe it should say "0kB saved" or whatever you find useful. This is a tiny cosmetic bug, it may just be confusing to users. Bug present for quite a few versions now, it didn't appear in the newest one.
Severity: normal → trivial
Summary: Purge message doesn't disappear if next purge does nothing → Purge message doesn't disappear from status bar if next purge does nothing

Walt, I think the reporter is using "compact folder". Do you agree? Can you reproduce?

I would think the status is intended to persist.

Looking at the attachment in bug 1705092, yes, I'm running "Compact folders" (not from the "File" menu, but on individual folders from their context menus). Sorry, I'm not using the native English version.
Still reproducible in 78.11.0, on POP3 folders (local ones; the message with the size doesn't appear on IMAP folders).
Perhaps the message should persist some time, I agree. It doesn't need to disappear e.g. after 5 seconds, I wouldn't want that. But perhaps it should persist just until the user's next activity, e.g. it should disappear when connecting to a mailbox, downloading messages, whatever. There still is just one status bar, so this is explainable and that's perfectly OK with me.
The thing is that if I run compacting on 10 folders one by one without anything else in between and the first one saves 1MB and the other 9 don't do anything, I still see the message "1 MB saved" after each folder (well, it's probably the same message that got shown once after the first one), and other users may read that as 10 MBs were saved in total, while it wasn't.
Hope it's a bit more clear now :)

I agree, after comment 2 was posted.

I can also reproduce using Drafts and Trash, other times the compacting status message clears on its own with other folders under my account level.
