I'm pretty sure the use of explicitOriginalTarget in devtools is somewhat random.
It seems to be used in cases where, I think, .originalTarget is more correct. Or event.composedTarget.

At https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/search?q=explicitOriginalTarget&path=devtools I see 3 unique consumers (devtools/client/inspector/grids/components/GridItem.js, devtools/client/inspector/shared/style-inspector-menu.js, and then a few copies of Reps). The Reps usage was removed at one point and then we ended up re-adding it due to a bug it was causing:
Original removal: https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html/pull/6335
Bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1469959
Rollback of removal: https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html/pull/6556

Hmm, how could one replace explicitOriginalTarget with relatedTarget. They point to totally different subtrees.
