Details

I was composing a new mail message and got a new mail notification popup that there were two new messages, one of them the one I was still composing. I'm using Thunderbird 60.2.1 under Windows 10 but it has behaved this way as long as I remember.

I have one new message in the inbox, one in drafts (a automatically saved copy of what I was editing), two in bugs and two in digests. I assume the two in bugs and digests were ignored because they had been present the last time I had restarted Thunderbird. That makes sense if the unwritten rule for what shows up in the new mail notification popup is that you hadn't been notified of that new message before. The new message in the inbox apparently arrived while I was writing a message.

But I can't think of any justification why Thunderbird should be notifying me of a unsent message in Drafts. Its supposedly smart enough not to tell me again of every new message, just new messages it has never notified me of. So why isn't it smart enough to ignore messages that not only haven't been sent, but I didn't even explicitly tell it to save? It should special case the Drafts folder. Its not like it doesn't know what folder is used for drafts.

I guess you could call this a enhancement request but I consider it a bug since most users would expect not to be notified of new mail for messages that have never been sent or received.
Right, very old bug, sadly the review for the fix got stuck :-(
