User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 SeaMonkey/2.49.4
Steps to reproduce:
1. Have multiple downloaded e-mails.
2. Read one and scroll to its bottom.
3. Open a new tab in and read another e-mail.
4. Go back to the original tab with its original e-mail.
Actual results:
It goes back to the beginning of the e-mail instead of the bottom.
Expected results:
It should have taken me where I left off. It's annoying if I need to go back and forth.
I was told Thunderbird has this problem too.
SeaMonkey/2.53 shows the same behavior.

I think that the Bug 1010731 in Thunderbird has to be fixed first.

probably something in the gecko editor. I doubt it is fixable in the near future unfortunately.

compose and reader would have the same root cause?

As I understand it, in both cases it is about the reader.
I take that from the description in both bugs and that's what I tested in SM2.53.
I do not know the dependencies between SM, MailNews Core and Thunderbird yet in the detail.
But after Frank has moved this bug from SM to MailNews Core, I think this bug might be a duplicate of the bug 1010731.
Or SM has to port this bug from Thunderbird?
I do not know why Frank put that on Composition.

I might be wrong but I think the editor component is used to display the mail. It might even turn out to be a core bug. If you think this is not the editor I will better move it back to SeaMonkey.

Indeed. Making a tab active again re-renders all its content from scratch (sometimes even with a different/correct charset, see bug 1287336). And that loses the scroll position. Has that ever been different?

This does not happen when switching tabs in current versions of Thunderbird. (I have just closed bug 1010731)
It does happen however when switching folders.
