User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0 SeaMonkey/2.49.4 Steps to reproduce: 1. Have multiple downloaded e-mails. 2. Read one and scroll to its bottom. 3. Open a new tab in and read another e-mail. 4. Go back to the original tab with its original e-mail. Actual results: It goes back to the beginning of the e-mail instead of the bottom. Expected results: It should have taken me where I left off. It's annoying if I need to go back and forth. I was told Thunderbird has this problem too.
SeaMonkey/2.53 shows the same behavior.

I think that the Bug 1010731 in Thunderbird has to be fixed first.
Depends on: 1010731
Component: MailNews: Message Display → Composition
Product: SeaMonkey → MailNews Core
Version: SeaMonkey 2.49 Branch → 52
probably something in the gecko editor. I doubt it is fixable in the near future unfortunately.
(In reply to bblack from comment #2) > I think that the Bug 1010731 in Thunderbird has to be fixed first. compose and reader would have the same root cause?

As I understand it, in both cases it is about the reader. I take that from the description in both bugs and that's what I tested in SM2.53. I do not know the dependencies between SM, MailNews Core and Thunderbird yet in the detail. But after Frank has moved this bug from SM to MailNews Core, I think this bug might be a duplicate of the bug 1010731. Or SM has to port this bug from Thunderbird? I do not know why Frank put that on Composition.

I might be wrong but I think the editor component is used to display the mail. It might even turn out to be a core bug. If you think this is not the editor I will better move it back to SeaMonkey.

Making a tab active again re-renders all its content from scratch (sometimes even with a different/correct charset, see bug 1287336). And that loses the scroll position. Has that ever been different?
Component: Composition → Message Reader UI
Product: MailNews Core → Thunderbird
Version: 52 → 52 Branch
Severity: normal → S3

This does not happen when switching tabs in current versions of Thunderbird. (I have just closed bug 1010731)
It does happen however when switching folders.
