At least, I think these are pre-release clients. Look at the fennec-android dash: https://sql.telemetry.mozilla.org/dashboard/fennec-android The recent numbers for nightly/beta are way down. Proof here: https://sql.telemetry.mozilla.org/queries/59627/source
Unfortunately we can't actually see the channel, because metadata only has normalizedChannel. You can see a few examples of this in the CEP. Further proof forthcoming using the raw ping data.
Frank, are you still looking into this?

Yes, this got delayed because of the Fennec Client-id issue, which were the actual cause of the nightly/beta count numbers being down. However, we are still seeing lots of default channel (per-channel ping counts below for Fennec core ping on 20181110): release = 70,373,788 beta = 1,493,015 default = 1,295,856 nightly = 203,161 nightly-mozilla-release = 134,499 developer = 3,268 Looks like it is 177186 clients reporting that channel.

Not an issue now that we've moved to Glean. We can open a new bug if we run into it there.
