User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:56.0; Waterfox) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.2.3 Steps to reproduce: Update from version 52 to 60 causes delays checking two mail accounts. Thunderbird becomes inoperative during this freeze. Actual results: Error message when typing thunderbird in terminal: JavaScript error: chrome://global/content/bindings/tree.xml, line 1285: TypeError: this.parentNode is null JavaScript error: chrome://messenger/content/mailWidgets.xml, line 2728: TypeError: this._parentMenupopup is null Expected results: Thunderbird 52.9.1 works perfectly (as does Claws Mail).
Delay is about 20 seconds while accounts are checked. Add-ons disabled in safe mode but not permanently so. On reboot everything works until desktop refreshed. Problem identified: Enigmail. Now disabled. It seems that enigmail is not compatible with thunderbird v60. Hopefully all fixed now. I can live without Enigmail. Thank you for your time. Please mark as "solved".
I spoke too soon. Fault still exists. All add-ons disabled. Fault is now intermittent - I will try to locate reason why.
The culprit was Shockwave Flash. Why did I have it and why did it not cause any conflict in thunderbird v52 ? Questions for another day. Enigmail was re-enabled. After desktop refresh and after reboot and after invoking Lightning, Thunderbird v60 consistently works fine. End of story. Cheers Wayne.
Shockwave doesn't run in Thunderbird afaik. Do you mean in some other application?

Summary: update to version 60.2.1 causes hangs when checking mail accounts → update to version 60.2.1 causes hangs when checking mail accounts, caused by Shockwave
Sorry for the delay, I kept getting the message from Bugzilla that I had been blocked due to too many requests. Baloney. Shockwave is installed as a plugin in both Firefox and Thunderbird by default. After further testing, it was not due to any add-ons at all. I can now create the delay at any time. Thunderbird freezes for about 20 seconds when the Inbox of the primary account is shown as selected. The message at the bottom of the screen reads: Host contacted, sending login information. If any other folder is highlighted, the freeze does not occur. Sending and receiving mail works fine.
The reason for the freeze was a subfolder attached to the primary Inbox. This subfolder was linked to a mailing list from long ago and perhaps no longer active. Once the subfolder was removed, Thunderbird resumed normal functioning. This has to be one for the books. Please close this issue and thank you, Wayne, for your patience.
