There are some reports [1] that for some people, Firefox randomly starts up with what looks like a fresh profile, i.e. home panels customisations are gone, first run screen appears again, etc. From that report it's not clear though whether this problem only affects the front-end, or whether Gecko itself has loaded the wrong profile, too. [1] mentions that about:addons still shows all their installed addons, which would seem to indicate that it's only the front-end that gets confused about the profile currently in use and hence loads the wrong/some non-existing settings, whereas Gecko itself uses the correct profile folder all the time.
