Threaded sort by date desc does not bring new message thread to top

Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:63.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/63.0
Steps to reproduce:
IMAP (Fastmail) based inbox
Set view to threaded, sort by date desc, starred
New message arrives on existing thread from a few days ago
Actual results:
The message is added to the thread and it highlights as unread, but it does not bring the thread to the top of the unstarred items within the inbox (this used to work well), and hence I keep missing new messages on a thread because it was off the first page.
Expected results:
The thread should have been brought up the inbox.
If I clear and re-apply the sort, it does work, which seems to indicate that the issue is something like:
- apply sort will sort existing threads by the date of the newest message in the thread
but
- add new message will find a thread and add it to the thread, but not move that thread in the index

Similar, but not the same problem here since the update to 60.3:
I have two accounts joined in a unified INBOX folder. New messages do appear at the bottom of the list. However, new messages which are in a threaded conversation do move the whole thread to the top of the window above the oldest message.
- This does not happen in the individual INBOX folders of the two accounts, only in the unified INBOX.
- This does not happen if view is switched to "unthreaded" .
- The behavior persists even if all add-ons are disabled and after computer restart.

Linux 64 bit, 60.3.0 on Gentoo Linux (compiled locally) using gcc 7.3.0
Recent upgrade from 50s version of Thunderbird which worked fine.
Inbox, with 6 different email accounts, including local folders, threaded view
Regional settings set to Australia (dd/mm/yyyy).
Set sort by date of messages to descending (^), when clicked, correctly shows BUT, if quit Thunderbird and re-open, am completely confused as to what the sort order is, have to click the 'Date' twice (V then ^ again) and scroll to the top to fix the ordering. Curiously, year dd/mm/10 seems to come first, then dd/mm/09 from local folders, then correct date sort order all the way back to 2003. I also note that the entire block of 'out of order' messages at the top of the list, ALL are threaded with at least 2 messages, many of which are 2 only messages which are identical in local folders (significant portion in the local sent folder) (looks like I duplicated them somehow).
Also, later, if new messages arrive, the sort ordering goes haywire again, requiring me to click the 'Date' twice (V then ^ again) and scroll to the top to fix the ordering.
Happy to provide additional information on request.
Happens in a Saved Search too:
