User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/70.0.3538.77 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Receive new mail. Actual results: I use Thunderbird 32-bit, on Win10 Pro 64-bit, and have used it successfully for years. I just had the automatic upgrade to Thunderbird 60.3.0, and I'm suddenly seeing an issue where the new-mail indicator (in the "tray", near the clock) no longer disappears automatically when I read the new mail. HOWEVER, I've noticed that if I navigate up a level, from the Inbox up to the parent "account" node (the one that contains the subitems Inbox, Sent, Deleted etc.) then the new mail indicator does seem to disappear. I would never normally click on that parent node though; I only did it while experimenting around this issue. Can provide screenshots, configs etc. if you let me know exactly what is needed. (Note: I found a couple of bugs *possibly* related to this one, but 401120 is marked resolved, and 222068 seems to involve filters; so I suppose my issue is either unrelated or a regression.) Expected results: New mail indicator should disappear almost immediately when I read the new mail (at the same time as the mail loses its bold "unread" font).

Please check this issue on TB 68 when it's released in a week or so.

What do you mean by "read new mail". How do you read it? Do you click on it in the notification or do you click on it in a folder. The notification should disappear after a few seconds, irrespective or whether you're reading the mail or not.

I have Thunderbird 60.8 and it says it's up to date. Is this "TB 68"?

To clarify:
I sent myself mail and quickly closed Thunderbird.
I reopened Thunderbird.
The new mail appeared in my inbox, in bold type (meaning "unread") and the "green arrow envelope" icon appeared in the tray area. (I will refer to this as "the icon".)
I clicked on the new mail in my inbox, so that the text appeared in the lower portion, and I could read the message. The icon remained.
I pressed the DEL key to delete the new message completely. The icon remained.
I hovered on the icon. It said "[removed my domain name] has 1 new message." The icon did not disappear immediately, but seemed to be gone a few seconds later.
I believe the new mail icon in the tray should disappear at the exact second when I no longer have any new unread mail. There should not be a delay. To my knowledge, there is no computational expense associated with sending a Windows message that would justify this delay.

Yes, 60.8 is the current official version, then we'll have 60.9, then 68.0 or 68.1.

You're complaining that the tray icon (seen here: https://menga.net/thunderbird-imap-tray-notification-crapola) doesn't clear the very millisecond you read the e-mail. Hmm. I don't think it our top priority to fix that given all the other notification issues: https://mzl.la/2KTPpnF

This is still an issue as of version 115.1.0. To clarify, any new message indicator (orb and number in taskbar, colored account in the accounts & folders list) remains until the UI is interacted with in a specific manner (selection in the folders menu is changed.) Although this isn't exactly critical, it would be nice if this was given some priority since I'm starting to get a little notification fatigue when I see a false status in my taskbar. 😄

This deserves better priority for sure.
Just to clarify, the badge number in the taksbar will stay there until I click "Get Messages" icon, while having correct inbox clicked.
And it looks like I've been doing it for 5 years :(, that's insane :D.
And I'm not alone:
