So this has been a reoccurring problem since I got my new laptop. I basically find that tabs crash or are unresponsive immediately after opening. I do have a Nvidia 1070 GPU built into the laptop and so based upon reading these crash reports I suspect that there is an issue there. Perhaps it is directly with the driver and not Firefox but firefox is where I'm consistently feeling the pain so to speak. I am using the proprietary driver built-in to PopOS/Ubuntu 18.10 and that is version 390.77 - so it may be difficult to track down if it is a proprietary driver problem but I don't understand what is happening to make Firefox tabs crash. Let me know if you need any additional info. This bug was filed from the Socorro interface and is report bp-fccbcc3e-94b0-4daf-ab9d-52ef30181120. ============================================================= Top 10 frames of crashing thread: 0 libc-2.28.so libc-2.28.so@0x114219 1 libGLX_nvidia.so.410.57 libGLX_nvidia.so.410.57@0xab4b4 2 libGLX_nvidia.so.410.57 libGLX_nvidia.so.410.57@0xab142 3 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57@0xea450e 4 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57@0xea45cc 5 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57@0xd92460 6 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57 libnvidia-glcore.so.410.57@0x9ffc03 7 libxul.so mozilla::gl::GLContext::InitExtensions /build/firefox-M7GLkW/firefox-63.0+build2/gfx/gl/GLContext.h:577 8 libxul.so mozilla::gl::GLContext::InitWithPrefixImpl /build/firefox-M7GLkW/firefox-63.0+build2/gfx/gl/GLContext.cpp:681 9 libxul.so mozilla::gl::GLContext::InitWithPrefix /build/firefox-M7GLkW/firefox-63.0+build2/gfx/gl/GLContext.cpp:323 =============================================================

From Crash Report, gl libraray seems to have a problem. robbt, can you check if crash happens with Environment Variable "LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1"?
Flags: needinfo?(robbt)
Sure thing. I just did this. Just to clarify this is a systemwide environmental variable set for instance by export=LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 via the terminal vs. a specific thing I need to set inside of Firefox. I just did that and I'll see if it resolves the issue. This is basically setting Firefox to avoid the hardware library and render things in software. Also the Nvidia driver was 410.57 which is the latest stable. I was mistaken as to what the driver I was using but clarified this.

I did this and I didn't recreate the problem but I just realized that after a reboot I didn't set it and it happened again. So I'm trying again with it set.
A further point of information. This seems to primarily occur when I've opened up a lot of tabs and then the memory usage hits some threshold and intermittently new tabs fail to respond to URLs. I'm happy to do further debugging or profiling if that would be helpful in diagnosing the cause.

¡Hola Rob!

Are you still able to reproduce https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1508678 on the current https://nightly.mozilla.org ?

Please update and report back.

¡Gracias!
Alex

So I actually totally forgot about this bug. Meaning it hasn't affected me. I'm currently running nvidia-settings: version 418.56 and a Firefox 68.0.2 and I haven't had any crashes or misbehaviour. I had also upgraded to a Ubuntu 19.04 based Pop! OS so I no longer have the previous system to test it on. I'd say it could be safe to close this as some kind of bug caused by weirdness in the proprietary drivers. Thanks for following up.

Bugbug thinks this bug is a regression, but please revert this change in case of error.
