With complex sites that involve 2 to 5 cookies, such as http://www.cnn.com, performance from time URL is entered to full page display is noticably longer when compared to IE 5.5. Time difference was roughly 4 seconds, Mozilla vs IE for CNN. At first I thought it might be a DNS issue, but on further review a stronger theory lay perhaps in cookie handling. In order to bring users to Mozilla, performance must match IE or surpass it. Suggested approach to fix: Run speed tests with minimum of 20 major web pages/portals and fine tune Mozilla for performance. My Mozilla and machine config is as follows: Mozilla 1.1a Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.1a) Gecko/20020610 Report Created:6/15/02 at 12:14:24 AM Version of ASP that generated this report = 2.7 (note:this string only shows up in pre-final or debug versions) Software overview Serial number: QT1083LFJBD Mac OS overview System: Mac OS X 10.1.5 (5S60) Startup device Name: X Memory overview Built-in memory: 768 MB Number of empty RAM slots: 0 () PC100-222S Location Size Memory type SODIMM0/J16TOP256 MB SDRAM SODIMM1/J16BOTTOM512 MB SDRAM Backside L2 cache: 1 MB Hardware overview Machine ID: 406 Model name: PowerBook G4 Keyboard type: Apple Pro Keyboard Processor info: PowerPC G4 (1.3) Machine speed: 500 MHz Production information ROM revision: Boot ROM version: 4.18f5
WorksForMe using FizzillaCFM/2002061014. Both IE and Mozilla load CNN in approximately 5 seconds. Greg L., do your IE and Mozilla have comparable cache settings? It might be useful for you to run your own speed tests on a variety of sites. Editing Summary.

Greg Lynn, is this still a problem with more recent builds? If so, have you tested using a new Mozilla user profile? Otherwise, we'll need from you some more detailed measurements of Mozilla vs. other browsers on a variety of URLs. -->Networking: HTTP for now.

Greg K. are you using same machine and OS setup? I am on vacation and will be unable to provide additional data for a week. As to suggestion about using a new user profile, how is that relevant to a performance issue? Was something fixed in profiles? Please provide details. Thanks.
Greg L.: no, I'm not using the same machine type as you. That's probably not a contributing factor. Corruption of your Mozilla user profile might be a factor. Testing using a new profile will help determine that. It's not urgent. If you can, just test when you return from vacation.
Is this still a problem in 1.1 or later? pi
