We'd like to use the latest Wordpress (currently 5.0.3) on the UX blog https://blog.mozilla.org/ux/

@Craig - not sure what is entailed here, probably an upgrade to the WP instance.
@Verdi - can you please indicate the reasoning behind the request, what new features/enhancements/security, etc. are in the latest WP version vs. those in 5.0.3 to justify the T&E required?

Sorry, 5.0.3 is the latest. I mean current older version in use vs. that latest.

So WordPress 5 has a new editor. I think it really simplifies laying out a blog post. Here's some info about it:

I guess if this means updating everyone's Wordpress then it's probably best to also add the plugin that let's you switch to the classic editor - https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/

That's the plan. We'll be installing and network-activating the classic editor plugin to give all blog users the option of which editor they prefer to use. The new editor (code named Gutenberg) so far is in a bit of a "love it or hate it" situation, where some people take to it right away and others find it insufferable. Even for those who like it, it's a radical departure from the classic editor and comes with a learning curve. Being able to toggle between editors will let blog users adjust to the change at their own pace. WordPress has promised to continue supporting the classic editor for at least two years.
So the WordPress 5 upgrade is already in the works, but IT/webops has just been through a reorg and I think people's roles and responsibilities are still settling into place so we haven't made the leap just yet. I don't have a specific date right now but it will be very soon.
