Steps to reproduce:

1 - Go to local folders
2 - Select any folder
3 - Right click on folder
4 - Select "Properties" from pop up menu.

Actual results:

Folder properties dialog opened

Expected results:

Expected to see a "retention policy" tab, but no tabs were visible. Visible was a simple dialog with text boxes for "Name", and "Location", a check box for "include messages in this folder ...", a "Fallback Text Encoding" select box etc.

And also if you do help | restart with add-ons disabled?

So you also do not see a Synchronization tab?

TB60 has been out for many months and as far as I know we doesn't any bugs reported like this. What version of thunderbird is shown in Help?

And is this also seen for imap account folders, if you have any?

the web page: https://davescomputertips.com/how-to-stop-thunderbird-message-auto-deletion/ suggests that there should be 5 tabs: general Information, Retention policy, Synchronization, Sharing and Quota. In folder properties dialog I see no tabs but only fields for General Information.

I also note that there is no "Synchronization and Storage" item in account settings.

I gather that imap is a type of mail server. I use a POP mail server.

i am wondering whether this problem occurred due to upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04.

The version of Thunderbird I am using is from the Ubuntu repository. Could this version be problematic?

"Build" might be a more correct word to use rather than "version".

But seriously that web page is not good advice. On an imap account the server retention policy will the synchronised to Thunderbird regardless for local retention policies.

I suggest you go to the help menu and select troubleshooting information. Please copy and paste the information under application basics and Extensions and paste it into a reply here in Bugzilla.

I jut spun up a copy of Linux mint and downloaded the Thunderbird from the rep. It appears to be 60.2.1. Nothing like being months out of date.

However the only folder I can make show no retention tab is the outbox. As that folder does not hold mail for longer than it takes to go online and send it I expect that is not an accident.

What folder exactly are you seeing this on? Does it contain mail?

The only folders I have under Local folders in TB 60.2.1 on Linux Mint 19.1 are Drafts, Sent, Trash and Outbox.

The Drafts and Outbox folders only have the General Information tab.

The Sent and Trash folders have General Information and Retention Policy tabs. I do have 2 messages in the Sent folder which uses my Local Folder Disk Space setting, "Don't delete any messages" for the Retention Policy. Nothing in Trash.

I jut spun up a copy of Linux mint and downloaded the Thunderbird from the rep. It appears to be 60.2.1. Nothing like being months out of date.

However the only folder I can make show no retention tab is the outbox. As that folder does not hold mail for longer than it takes to go online and send it I expect that is not an accident.

What folder exactly are you seeing this on? Does it contain mail?

None of the Folder Properties dialogs for local folders have tabs. This functionality was there previously and i had used it to set up auto delete for mail in that folder. Auto delete is now happening on that folder and I now have no ability to control it.

It looks like you are using the Ambiance theme for Ubuntu.

The tabs are there, you just don't see the borders. You should be able to click on Retention Policy and see the dialog.

Switch to the Adwaita(default) theme for Ubuntu and you will see well defined tabs.

Don't switch to the Radiance theme. The tabs aren't well defined there either.

Tested with the Ubuntu build of Thunderbird 60.2.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.1 Gnome 3.28.2 desktop.

The same Ubuntu theme problems apply to the Thunderbird 60.4.0 and 65.0b2 builds from Thunderbird.

Okay, I was referring to themes available for Ubuntu, not Thunderbird. Those affect the look of Thunderbird.

They can be changed using the Tweaks application.

This worked. A lot of other tabs have now appeared in other Thunderbird dialogs as well.

This sort of fix was completely unexpected.

I am a retired Java web developer so I am computer literate. I expect that a non technical person would be completely flummoxed by this sort of issue. Which is why I would be reluctant to recommend Linux to a non-technical person.

I think that the Linux community needs to rectify the underlying cause of problems like this if they want Linux to become more main stream. I suspect that problem was a problematic theme.
