In bug 1386601 we landed an experimental patch.
Let's use this bug to clean that up. If permanently, we could use keeler's suggestion to use the static mutex type (bug 1386601 comment 39). Or, we might decide to revert the original change.
At this point of time, we're still waiting for the result of the experiment (whether it helps, or not, regarding the topcrash from bug 1386601).
