User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:65.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/65.0

Steps to reproduce:

setting to desable seach from url field but only search field
type an url in url field

Actual results:

url is requested as seach with my defined search engine even if i havent set it so

Expected results:

no seach drop down should be displayed with suggested seach engines

Hi almooj,

I am rephrasing what you have written (Please correct me, if you have done some other things which have given you other results )

Steps to reproduce:

-Go to Options/Settings > Search > Disable search suggestions
-Going back in the address bar, type an url

Actual Results:

Url is shown as search with a search suggestion, with default search engine

Expected results:

You want no other results except the url

Please let me know, if you wanted to state something else. If that is the case for you

With search suggestion disabled, you should be able to see two results in the drop-down after typing your provided web address - one of them is for visiting the particular website and another result is to search that keyword with the default search engine.

In the options, you can enable another search box for searching things. But, that does not implies that Address bar/ Awesome bar cannot be used to search an actual web address. It is not an actual bug, it is the way it should work as of now. Though, it could be an enhancement request.

Hi, Marco Bonardo
Would you please look at this issue? I might be wrong on something but you can give proper insight for this issue.

Hi all,

As discuss earlier, doesn't seem to be a bug after all but more or less a feature by design with awsome bar...

in fact the "search in search bar or url bar" option doesnt make sense anymore or is bit misleading as if someone for confidentiality purpose (to avoid url query to be sent out on some search engine)doesnt want to click search engine on purpose (iknow that it could sonds stupid but a click on the wrong icon can occur accidentatly)

it is surely up to you what could be improved there and thx anayway for all the great work thats been made here ...

If you mean the pre-selected top row that appears in the Address Bar, that's not a search suggestion and it's the firefox behavior from a long long time, even before we removed the Search bar. That row only tells you what is going to happen when you confirm (with enter) what is currently typed into the input field.
There is an option in about:config named keyword.enabled that makes the address bar always try to visit a page rather than search, maybe you are looking for that.

If it's not this, then please attach a screenshot so that I can better evaluate your problem.

Hi all,
definetly not a bug this "by design" behaviour appear since last ff update 64 or 65
and could be an issue if you're trying to reach a specific host without a defined FQDN as showed in thoses screen shots

about:config tweak doesnt seem to workaround it

(amazon photo embeded url seems to fail with markdown please see it the in the link bellow)

did you set keyword.enabled to FALSE? it should not really search with that setting, I can't reproduce.

Flags: needinfo?(almooj)

yes you are right it didnt try at all to use any search engine

so it works for me

it s only a bit misleading cause the url field display it will search or open url

thx anyway

it is just problably me that feel misled

regards

If you have ideas on how we could make it clearer, let us know. I actually think we always show the effective action that will happen in the first result, if it tells you it's searching but will instead visit, take a sshot and we can have a look.
