Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:65.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/65.0

Steps to reproduce:

Started Thunderbird.

Actual results:

Dialog box pops up asking if I want to compress folders. I click Yes. It errors out, every time, because the folders are in use, because, duh, on startup, Thunderbird is checking for new email.

Expected results:

Make Compress Folders run first.. New Mail Check can wait until it's done. Have the Compress Folders action wait for the New Mail Check to finish? Or just put a delay on it. Seriously.. having it run first thing on startup.. who wouldn't know that the check mail would make it fail?

What happens if you wait a minute before clicking yes?
If still a problem, what happens if you start Windows in safe mode mode, and then start Thunderbird in safe mode?

Tried waiting for the new mail check to finish before hitting OK a while back. Beyond all belief, the check mail routine seems to be waiting on the compression dialog box. No matter how long I wait, I get the error message. Didn't an old version of Thunderbird have the option to compress when you shut it down? That worked well, really. Making Check Mail wait on Compression to finish would work. It would make for a longer effective start up time, but better than getting the new mail then compression, while the user sees new email but can't read it yet because Compression has locked the database.

Windows Safe Mode? Really? <heavy sigh>
JUST to satisfy this cruel itch you seem to have.. this issue has been around since the mid-50's, version-wise. I only waited until now because, A, my hard drive died, so this is a fresh install with NO plugins, so I'm sure it's NOT a change I made. And, B, it was the third thing I installed (Windows 10, Firefox, Thunderbird). No safe modes should be needed.

As far as I know, the mail check doesn't block on the compact routine. And I don't recall other users reporting such an issue like this, so some basic diagnosis is required here.

Sure, safe mode shouldn't be needed. But that is the first step of diagnosis, so that is what is needed even here. So please...

a) Start Windows safe mode with networking enabled

b) visit help > troubleshooting please copy only the account information section and paste it here

c) what is the size of the Inbox(es)

Fine.. but tell me how I force a Compact Folders on startup. It only tries to compact a couple times a week.

send yourself a few large messages totallying say 20 MB, then delete them, and restart thunderbird

Summary: Compress folders on Startup Doesn't Work → Compact folders on startup doesn't work because folders busy getting new mail

It seems the last update fixed the bug - I haven't received the error message in over a week - used to happen more than once a week. I would consider this issue closed.
