User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.12; rv:65.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/65.0
Steps to reproduce:
The new 60.5 version for the Mac was recently installed on my machine (Mac OS 10.12.6). Now I repeatedly get the spinning rainbow and TB just hangs. In the Mac activity monitor, it just says that TB is not responding. I have tried to identify an action that I take to cause it, but I can't find anything consistently. This happens frequently enough where the application is basically unusable. I never had this behavior ever occur on any prior versions of TB (long-time user).
Actual results:
Thunderbird just hangs and doesn't respond.
Expected results:
Am attaching the top of Mac's detailed error report.

What are you doing in Thunderbird at the time that it hangs? Does CPU usage for Thunderbird show as being high, or low or zero?
FWIW, other reports https://mzl.la/2UsWA9Y
If you do not have any add-ons, can you try the beta from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/

I have tried to notice a pattern when it hangs. It does appear that I have just sent an email, then I move back to my queue to examine other messages. That seems to be the common behavior that causes the hang. However, obviously it doesn't happen on all message sends. The majority work just fine. This does seem to be the behavior that others are reporting too in that link you cited above.
I was hoping the new 60.5.3 version might fix it (just installed on my machine late last week) but the hang just happened again a couple minutes ago. I looked at the Activity monitor and the hanging thunderbird process was using very little CPU.

It just happened again to me. I had left up my activity monitor. TB was using about 15% of the CPU, but then when I got the spinning rainbow and TB changed to (not responding) in the activity monitor, it's down to anywhere from 0.3 to about 0.5% of CPU. It's reporting 56 threads and 63 Idle wake ups. For memory usage, TB is taking 556 MB which is second to a kernel task in overall memory usage. (I know that's all relative to what else is going on though.)

Try starting Mac in safe mode.
Make sure spotlight search is not enabled on Thunderbird at preferences > advanced > general.
Possible suspects - bug 1381485, bug 413240

I had checked and spotlight search wasn't on. Note, however, that I didn't start my Mac in safe mode. I just didn't want to do that.
I noticed that the problem was still occurring for a few weeks after receiving your message above. Recently, however, I do not recall my machine locking up over the past 2 weeks (I estimate). I will keep monitoring it and I will let you know if it (the hanging) happens again.

Well, I spoke too soon. Just this morning, right after opening TB, I sent an email and then went back to my queue and got the spinning rainbow. It was hanging again.
This happens to my entire office repeatedly. The problem happens when you click from Thunderbird to another program - often Chrome or Safari, but I've had it happen with other programs too. We are running Macs with OS as old as 10.10 and as new as 10.14, and it happens on all of them. It just started happening maybe 6-9 months ago - we've been using ThunderBird for years with no issues. I report this every single time it freezes and I have to force quit, in hopes it will get fixed.

Is this a gmail account?
Any better with 68 from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/ ?

I'm testing TB on macOS 10.12 I've got three IMAP accounts setup on the system one being gmail. I was able to make it beach ball once by following comment 7. However, this lock up was quickly resolved and went back to normal operations. I'll leave it open for a few hours and try again to try to mimic a typical working day.
Will report back if I can get it to hang for longer than a few moments.

I am seeing similar issues on the systems of 5 - 7 users in our company. The machines are running (the latest public revisions of) 10.13 and 10.14. And range from 2012 Mac Minis to the 2-month old Macbook Pro 13” w/ Touchbar. Minimum of 8GB memory, all with SSD drives.
We started seeing the issue somewhere around Thunderbird 60, and are seeing it still with Thunderbird 60.0.8. I have not had any of the users try the Beta yet, but will consider doing so.
These are not gmail accounts; we are using an in-house imap server.
The users do have some larger email folders, however the behavior does not seem to happen while specifically working with those folders. All of the users report that the behavior “stays”; once the beachball spinner starts, they have to eventually force close Thunderbird and reopen it.
The length of time between each issue varies, but the issue happens a number of times during each given work day.
For one user, the issue seems to happen more often when sending or forwarding an email with an attachment, however, the other users report that it can happen just when bringing the application back up on the screen (from being minimized).

The frequency is concerning. I'm afraid my mac instance wont update to 10.13 or 10.14 so I can't test on either. I'm moving this from unconfirmed to new given that we now have 3 separate reports.
If you aren't opposed to installing the beta on one of the machines AMJones that would give us some good debugging info. Let us know.
Also that goes for anyone else Michelle, John. If you have a chance to try the latest beta and report back that would help tremendously.

Or was it fixed with 60.8.0?
Link to the current beta if interested.

I have tested the beta for a few days now. I didn't have any problems with it freezing until this morning, when I sent an email and it did the same thing as before. I'll keep testing to see if it happens again, and hopefully determine what might be different in these instances from the rest of the emails being sent.

I ended up having multiple freezes today on the beta version. It happened a number of times when I switched the send from account on the new email window, but a few other times it happened, I left the send from account as it was. Running OS 10.14.5 and ThunderBird 69.0b2.

Bug 1381485 bears repeating. Try setting sent to local Sent folder in account settings. What are your results?

I have seen this also after upgrading to TB 60.8.0 and Mac OSX Mojave. It seems to occur when sending a message and moving the cursor to attend to other matters before the composition window is entirely closed. TB is listed in activity monitor as not responding and I always have to force quit. I keep sending bug reports to Apple, but behavior persists. It started within the past year. I have never seen this behavior with TB earlier. I find it hugely annoying because TB does not restore my windows (drafts etc) when reopening. I often loose my drafts this way. This happens also when nothing else is happening on the laptop, so cannot be an issue that laptop is running out of CPU or memory.

Marianne,
You changed both at the same time?
Does this happen frequently, or is it easy to reproduce?
And what version of Thunderbird were you running prior to 60.8.0?

Sorry for the late response. Yes, both were changed - I got a new computer/laptop that had the new OS for a year and then had to be upgraded. TB is asking to be updated automatically when new releases take place. To be honest, I don't recall what version was installed prior to upgrade since the first OS and TB install in early 2018 was the latest at the time. Then a year went by with my not using the laptop and then I started using it early 2019 when Apple recommended that the OS was upgraded (and then I had to upgrade TB too). That is what happened. Perhaps that helps to identify the prior version of TB. Thanks!
I am on 60.9.1 (64-bit) now, and it still occurs sometimes. I notice it when I send a message when I move the cursor right after clicking 'send' but TB is still processing the sending of the file. I now try to be careful to have TB send the file before moving my cursor to do other stuff.
Thanks
