User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.13; rv:65.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/65.0

Steps to reproduce:

We were getting some complaints around unicode issues today:

Users would just go to a random site, and they will get the following error message.

Actual results:

"Error 408: Encoding with UTF-16. Install Firefox addon for unicode support."

One user report that he also lost some add-ons after that.

Expected results:

If it was an add-ons that has been blocked recently, it should only remove the add-ons and Firefox should work normally.

We actually found the workaround for this issue by doing Firefox Refresh from about:support. But it might worth to see if it has something to do with the recent blocking in bug 1528761.

The follow-up says removing a recently added extension solved the issue:

Attachment 9045357 [details] shows https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/unicode-emoji-display/ which has the title Unicode & Emoji Support on AMO but simply Unicode Support in the doorhanger installation prompt. It's already been blocked a few minutes ago in bug 1529328 so I don't think there's anything left to do here.

Looking at the reviews, many users complaining https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unicode-emoji-display/reviews/

Maybe should take a further action regarding this...

Good to see that it has been blocked. Let's resolve this as per bug 1529328.

It would be great to know where that error message comes from. Is there a way to find out?

Yofie, can you confirm where did you get the error message?

Can't AMO admins search the source code of all extensions for that string? One user reported "Google Translate with Right Click" as the offending add-on (bug 1504619), while another mentioned a Gmail notifier add-on but not a specific name.

I'll move this to Toolkit :: Blocklist Policy Requests since it seems clear this is caused by the presence of an add-on rather than the absence. The summary should probably also be updated.

Component: Untriaged → Blocklist Policy Requests
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

All of a sudden, my firefox browser showing "?" code, replacing most of the texts, and this happen on every websites i opened. So i "refresh firefox" from about:support then i think the bugs or malware is removed... i lost some addons after that, but not sure which addons cause that bug...
