User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:65.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/65.0

Steps to reproduce:

Hello, on Windows 10, in beta66.0b12 (64 bit) and a few earlier revisions (b11 and possibly b10 etc.) started problem with bookmarks. After some time of using Firefox (i do not know, maybe hours, maybe another day - i am putting computer to sleep), bookmarks toolbar stop reflecting my modifications (editting the bookmark entry name, url, or adding new entry - it is not modified or added - even in all bookmarks manager window)

Component: Untriaged → Bookmarks & History

Please make sure you're not running any applications like CCleaner which could interfere with Firefox.

When this next happens (i.e. you're in this state), please could try this:

  • Go to Help -> Troubleshooting Information
  • Scroll down the page to find the "Places Database" section (it is near the bottom).
  • Click the "Verify Integrity" button, this may take a few seconds to run.

Please copy and paste the output here.

What also may be useful, is also when you're in this state, please go to the Three-bar menu -> Web Developer -> Browser Console, then attempt to make modifications and see if any errors appear. If they do, please copy and paste them here as well.

i have not found ccleaner process, but i am using app called "Everything" which is indexing my HDD contents including firefox app folder and appdata folder..

When this next happens ... Troubleshooting Information ... "Places Database" ... "Verify Integrity"

This is the output:

Task: checkIntegrity

  • Unable to check favicons.sqlite integrity: [Exception... "Could not open connection to C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\stringhere.profile-numberhere\favicons.sqlite: 2153971713" nsresult: "0x80630001 (NS_ERROR_STORAGE_BUSY)" location: "JS frame :: resource://gre/modules/Sqlite.jsm :: openConnection/</< :: line 985" data: no]

Task: invalidateCaches

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Task: checkCoherence

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Task: expire

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Task: vacuum

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Task: _refreshUI

  • The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

when you're in this state, please go to the Three-bar menu -> Web Developer -> Browser Console, then attempt to make modifications

i tried this, there was some errors but do not seem related (seem to be some connection related), moreover none appear immediately after bookmark toolbar entry modification or delete attempt.

i am sorry for terrible formating. Unsure why i do not see editting button!

The output you pasted from Verify Integrity indicates that something is preventing Firefox from using its history database.

I would suggest that you try disabling or uninstalling the "Everything" app and see if your issues go away. If they do, then the issue is caused by the "Everything" app and you need to contact the makers of that app.

Please can you let us know if that solves your issue.

thank you, i disabled the MS Windows service of this app and excluded firefox profile directory out of its indexing, quit the app, restarted firefox while updating it (current version 66.0 beta) and worked in firefox till now (around 2 days), bookmark bar works - no issue, so i launched the app called Everything now, assuming app will no longer take care about Firefox profile files (as i instructed it) and no longer will break firefox workings regarding bookmarks. I will update if issue will re-appear. Though it would be good if Firefox is made the way it will not be broken (until restart?) if other software accessing its profile files (i assume as a noob).

Hello, "Everything" app is NOT the cause of this Firefox issue. Because i believe i stopped its service and quit the app yesterday, then restarted Firefox (it crash asking me to send bug report, it happens like this numerous months). And so clicked to restart Firefox, and today i see i am unable to edit/delete bookmarks again and the integrity check says: "Unable to check favicons.sqlite integrity"

So this issue remains, i hope you tell me on what to do now to discover cause of this.

Hi, we weren't quite sure that the "Everything" app would fix this, but it has at least eliminated one possibility.

For the favicons.sqlite issue, you could try visiting your profile, closing Firefox, removing favicons.sqlite and then starting Firefox again.

Could you also get some of the crash ids for the crashes you are seeing? If you type about:crashes in the address bar, it'll open up a page with crash ids. If you could get the ids of the last few and paste them here, that might help us to understand what's happening.

Unfortunately without further information we're not going to be able to help much more here, so I'll close this as incomplete for now. If you can provide more information, please feel free to re-open.

Regarding favicons.sqlite its modification date is 2 years back, though i renamed it, started firefox and see bookmarks icons was removed.

Regarding crash reports: https://privatebin.net/?f783cdecc367f764#jydWY6goIV/E6R1PBSTMuvgxn9JrLH/OUNkLBeYXUng=
password: mozilla

Update: after maybe one week I NO LONGER see problem with unmodifiable bookmarks even i am running "Everything" app.

  • The places.sqlite database is sane
  • The favicons.sqlite database is sane
    Unsure why the problem stopped.
If you need additional info to find the cause of this issue, let me know how to obtain the info.

I'd expect the bookmarks icons to be removed as favicons.sqlite is the storage for those. They'll start to recover as you visit them.

Regarding the crash reports there's nothing too obvious, although one of those is an issue with not having finished writing to the places database on shutdown. Given the other issues I don't think that's a big surprise.

Great, that's good news.

Unsure why the problem stopped.
If you need additional info to find the cause of this issue, let me know how to obtain the info.

I suspect the cause was a corrupt favicons.sqlite or for some reason inaccessible. The fact it hadn't been written to for 2 years also points to this. My only other thought was maybe an anti-virus had quarantined it due to a false-positive (though I would have expected it to move the file).

We've been making improvements over the last few versions to better handle a corrupt favicons.sqlite, so hopefully those will help with recovering from the situation.
