We are lucky this hasn't bitten us yet.

The plain builds need the libstdc++ compatibility hacks that we have
just as much as any of our regular builds. We also take this
opportunity to clear out some old environment variable settings from the
days when these builds used gcc.

I noticed some build times improvements on Linux plain builds.
Not too sure whether this is the bug that did it.
