[Affected versions]:

  • Firefox Release 66.0 and above

[Affected Platforms]:

  • All Windows
  • All Linux
  • All Mac

[Prerequisites]:

  • Have a Firefox profile with the "browser.ping-centre.log" pref set to "true" in the "about:config" page.
  • Have the "Browser Console" opened.

[Steps to reproduce]:

  1. Open the browser with the profile from prerequisites.
  2. Right-click on any "Top Site" card and select the "Open Link in New Tab" option.
  3. Focus the "Browser Console" and observe the displayed pings.

[Expected result]:

  • Specific "Activity Stream" pings are displayed.

[Actual result]:

  • No telemetry pings are displayed.

[Notes]:

  • This issue is not reproducible if you navigate to the desired "Top Site" using the middle-click or the "Ctrl + click"/"Shift + Click" shortcuts.
  • Attached a screen recording of the issue.

The OS/native context menu probably happens outside the scope of the page and the most we might know is that the user opened up the native context menu. ??

AS telemetry probes cannot capture the user interactions in the native context menu. The existing telemetry for AS context menu is good enough to meet the analytic needs.
